Academics
New Horizon International School is open 5 days a week, Sunday through Thursday
from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Our student body consists of children from all nationalities
from Reception class through the IGCSE years. Our teacher/student ratio is 1:11.
Students in our international department follow a programme based on the British
National curriculum which is supplied by the Department of Education in the United
Kingdom. From the youngest students, in Reception class, to the students in Lower
Senior Three, a curriculum which caters for all aspects of academic, creative, physical
and personal development is provided.
While the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science are central to our curriculum,
students experience a broad range of subjects including Cultural Studies, Information
and Communication Technology (ICT), Art and Design, as well as, Personal, Social
Health Education (Citizenship). All students also receive lessons in Arabic, Religion
and Social Studies based on the Egyptian National curriculum for these subjects.
Arabic studies begin in Reception class, Religion studies begin in Year One, and
Social Studies begin in Year Four. French is introduced as the second foreign language
beginning in Reception class in the form of songs, games, worksheets and colouring.
Beginning in Year Two students receive formal instruction in the French language.
Students do not receive a report card grade in French until Year Two.
Assessments and Examinations
A cumulative assessment programme provides an on-going record of student achievement
in all subject areas, and is combined with British National curriculum tests to
assure that the highest academic standards are sought and maintained. All teachers
are qualified based on the standards set by the Department of Education in their
native English speaking countries.
The international curriculum offered at New Horizon International School is based
upon the British National curriculum at Key Stages Two and Three. The method of
assessment is based upon the procedures and curricular statements provided by the
Department of Education in the United Kingdom. The internal assessments followed
at New Horizon are modelled on the guidelines of the National Curriculum – for example;
question structure, key skills and marking schemes. The international section makes
use of the teaching resources and textbooks specifically designed for the British
National curriculum. A variety of assessment techniques are used throughout the
programme including continuous assessment, projects, student self-assessment, pop
quizzes, end of unit tests and two sessions of internal examinations. The emphasis
throughout the programme is to develop each student’s body of knowledge, their understanding
of key skills/concepts and their ability to use the knowledge that they have acquired.
The curriculum content in all core subjects at New Horizon, together with the Egyptian
Ministry curriculum will provide each student with the necessary skills, knowledge
and preparation for any of the Secondary High school programmes on offer at New
Horizon. We offer a choice of the Egyptian National curriculum and the IGCSE programme.
Full details of the British National curriculum are available on the internet at
